The US Supreme Court has announced its ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges and has found state bans on same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional. The City of Wilton Manors couldn’t be more ecstatic about this favorable decision that now recognizes the constitutionality of same-sex marriage.
“Marriage equality has been vehemently debated for more than two decades. When I became Mayor in 2008 same sex marriage was legal in only two states. Today, we celebrate the constitutionality of marriage, which now grants same-sex couples the right to marry for the same reasons as everyone else: to make a lifelong promise of love and commitment to one another,” states Mayor Gary Resnick.
The Supreme Court announced its 5-4 ruling that the Constitution requires that same-sex couples be allowed to marry no matter where they live and that states may no longer reserve the right only for heterosexual couples.
The City of Wilton Manors, named the “Second Gayest City” in the United States, celebrates a diverse population and for many years has been a national leader in working to abolish discrimination for the LGBTQ community. Most recently, Mayor Gary Resnick worked with the National League of Cities to submit a brief to the Supreme Court supporting marriage equality on behalf of all US Cities.
“Today is a proud day for all of us who have long believed in and fought for marriage equality,” said City Commissioner Justin Flippen. “We are no longer a divided nation on this important social family issue, but a united country that affords all who wish to be joined in civil matrimony the ability to do so regardless of whom they love.”
The City of Wilton Manors will be joining organizations throughout Broward County and across the country in celebrating the “Decision Day” ruling by hosting celebrations.
The planned Broward Decision Day events, cosponsored by the City of Wilton Manors, Equality Florida and several other community organizations, include a rally at the Broward County Federal Courthouse (299 E Broward Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33301) at 4 p.m., followed by a gathering at Rumors Bar and Grill, (2426 Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors) at 6 p.m.
