Consumer prices in China were up 2.3 percent on year in February, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.
That exceeded forecasts for an increase of 1.8 percent, which would have been unchanged from the January reading.
It also marked the fastest rate since July 2014.
Ona monthly basis, CPI jumped 1.6 percent after adding 0.5 percent a month earlier.
The bureau also reported that producer prices were down 4.9 percent on year – in line with expectations following the 5.3 percent contraction in the previous month.
Producer prices have been mired in deflation for more than four years now.
