Czech Republic’s foreign trade surplus increased in January from a year ago, as exports grew faster than imports, figures from the Czech Statistical Office showed Tuesday.

The trade surplus in the national concept rose to CZK 19.3 billion in January from CZK 18.6 billion in the corresponding period last year. Economists had expected a surplus of CZK 19.0 billion for the month.

In December, the trade balance showed a deficit of CZK 314 million.

Exports climbed 2.4 percent year-over-year in January and imports went up by 2.3 percent.

On a monthly basis, both exports and imports grew by a seasonally adjusted 1.9 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively at the start of the year.
