Denmark’s foreign trade surplus climbed in January from a month ago, as imports fell faster than exports, figures from Statistics Denmark showed Thursday.

The trade surplus rose to DKK 6.2 billion in January from DKK 5.4 billion in the previous month.

Exports fell 2.0 percent monthly in January, in contrast to a 0.6 percent increase in December.

Similarly, imports dropped 3.1 percent in January, reversing a 1.3 percent rise in the preceding month.

Shipments to EU countries dipped 4.4 percent in January from a month earlier and those to non-EU countries slid by 1.7 percent.

In a separate report, the statistical office announced that country’s current account surplus shrank to DKK 11.6 billion in January from 12.1 billion in December.
