Donald Trump Heads For Laredo, Texas On The Mexican Border
Billionaire US Presidential candidate Donald Trump will tour the Mexican border Thursday.
“I am going to the border tomorrow. Will be seeing some really brave people. Look forward to a big day!” he tweeted to his more than 3.3-M followers Wednesday.
He will tour Laredo, a town on the Tex-Mex border, visit the border, address local law enforcement and have a press conference.
Mr. Trump leads polls among Republican and Republican-leaning independents in his bid to become President of the United States.
He is a serious critic of illegal immigration and launched his campaign in New York mid-June by calling Mexican immigrants a source of crime and rape in the United States.
“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” he said in June when he entered his bid for the White House.
“They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
The latest opinion poll put Mr. Trump far in the lead in the race for the 2016 Republican nomination, the favorite at 24%
He is outpacing rivals Scott Walker (13%) and Jeb Bush (12%), according to the Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The W-P said most of those polled were interviewed before Mr. Trump laid into US Senator John McCain (R-AZ)
Enthusiasm among Republicans for Mr. Trump tops that of Sen. McCain even after his POW comments.
Hector Garza, the president of a local union chapter of the National Border Patrol Council, invited Mr. Trump to give him a “boots on the ground perspective.”
The organization’s Managing Director Brandon Darby worked with Mr. Garza to plan Mr. Trump’s tour.
Mr. Trump’s visit to Laredo, where the population is over 90% Hispanic, will begin with a Town Hall meeting in which law enforcement officers will give him their own views on the situation at the border.
