Dutch consumer confidence strengthened notably in October to the highest level in more than eight years, while consumer spending climbed at a stable pace in August, figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics showed Tuesday.

The seasonally adjusted consumer confidence index rose to 8.0 in October, marking its best reading in more than eight years, from 5.0 in the previous month. In August, the score was 6.0.

With eight consumer confidence in October is above the average for the last twenty years, the agency said.

The increase in confidence was mainly because consumers were more positive about the economic climate. The corresponding index climbed to 20 in October from 14 in September.

Their willingness to buy in October also improved, with the index rising to 0 from -2 in the prior month.

The statistical office also revealed that consumer spending increased at a stable rate of 1.4 percent annually in August.

In June, spending had risen 2.4 percent. The index has been rising since October 2014.
