Economist Poll Has Donald Trump Leading The GOP Candidates
Billionaire businessman Donald Trump is leading the Republican field in the latest national poll from The Economist/YouGov.
Mr. Trump is 4 pts ahead of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who are tied for 2nd place, in the poll taken 4-6 July of 1,000 registered voters.
- Donald Trump: 15 percent
- Jeb Bush: 11 percent
- Rand Paul: 11 percent
- Scott Walker: 9 percent
- Marco Rubio: 9 percent
- Mike Huckabee: 9 percent
- Ben Carson: 7 percent
- Chris Christie: 6 percent
- Ted Cruz: 4 percent
- Carly Fiorina: 3 percent
- Rick Perry: 2 percent
- Rick Santorum: 2 percent
- John Kasich: 2 percent
- Lindsey Graham: 1 percent
- George Pataki: 0 percent
In addition, 12% of registered voters said that Mr. Trump is their 2nd-choice pick. When the 2 numbers are combined, that means 1-in-4 Republican voters see Mr. Trump as either their 1st or 2nd choice.
67% of those who said Mr. Trump was either their 1st or 2nd choice also said that they are Tea Party supporters, and several of his supporters identified as “very conservative,” which means that Donald Trump’s recent comments on immigration are hitting a nerve and resonating with the voters.
Mr. Trump’s favorable rating has increased in recent weeks.
In mid-June, 38% of Republicans had a favorable view of the real estate mogul. That number has since risen 11 percentage points, with 49% of GOP voters now saying they view him favorably.
However, Republicans do not think Mr. Trump will actually win the nomination.
Only 7% of registered Republican voters think Mr. Trump will be the GOP’s presidential nominee in Y 2016, 29% said it will be Jeb Bush, 12% expect Rand Paul to win the nomination, and Senator Rubio and Gov. Walker are tied at 8%.
Mr. Trump is also leading the GOP field in North Carolina, according to a new poll by the Public Policy Polling group.
