Estonia’s foreign trade deficit increased notably in January from a year ago, as exports fell and imports rose, figures from Statistics Estonia showed Wednesday.

The trade deficit widened to EUR 158 million in January from EUR 42.3 million in the corresponding month last year. In December, the shortfall was EUR 161 million.

Exports plunged 11.0 percent year-over-year in January, while imports climbed by 2.0 percent.

Shipments of mineral products declined the most by 36.0 percent annually in January and that for electrical equipment tumbled by 25.0 percent.

Exports to EU countries dipped 8.0 percent in January from a year ago, while arrivals from EU member states grew by 7.0 percent.
