Estonia’s retail sales growth accelerated for the second straight month in January, figures from Statistics Estonia showed Wednesday.

The volume of retail sales excluding vehicles climbed 8.0 percent year-over-year in January, faster than the 7.0 percent gain in December, which was revised down from a 12.0 percent surge reported earlier.

The latest rate of increase was the sharpest since December 2014, when sales had risen the same 8.0 percent.

The turnover of stores selling manufactured goods grew 5.0 percent annually in January and sales at grocery stores went up by 4.0 percent.

On a monthly basis, retail sales plunged 18.0 percent at the beginning of the year, in contrast to a 21.0 percent jump in the preceding month.

This was a usual fall following the Christmas and end-of-year sales in December, the agency said.
