Estonia’s foreign trade deficit increased in August from a year ago, as exports fell faster than imports, figures from Statistics Estonia showed Friday.
The trade deficit widened to EUR 123.8 million in August from EUR 92.3 million in the corresponding month last year. In July, the shortfall was EUR 164.9 million.
Exports dipped 6.0 percent year-over-year in August and imports dropped by 3.0 percent.
The decrease in exports was mostly influenced by a fall in the trade of electrical equipment, metals and products thereof, and mineral products, the agency said.
Shipments to EU member states decreased 2.0 percent and imports from EU slipped 3.0 percent.
In the January to August period, total trade deficit of the country narrowed to EUR 957.6 million from EUR 1.14 billion in the same period of the previous year. Both exports and imports fell by 2.0 percent and 4.0 percent, respectively.
