Estonia’s foreign trade deficit increased slightly in September from a year ago, as exports fell faster than imports, figures from Statistics Estonia showed Tuesday.
The trade deficit rose to EUR 146.1 million in September from EUR 144.5 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. In August, the shortfall was EUR 106.4 million.
Exports plunged 10.0 percent year-over-year in September and imports declined by 9.0 percent.
The biggest decrease occurred in the exports of electrical equipment, mineral products and raw materials and products of the chemical industry.
Shipments to EU member states slid 5.0 percent annually in September and imports from EU fell by 7.0 percent.
During the first nine months of the year, total trade deficit of the country was EUR 1.08 billion against EUR 1.28 billion deficit in the same period last year. Both exports and imports dropped by 3.0 percent and 5.0 percent, respectively.
