Eurozone unemployment declined as expected in May to the lowest since July 2011, Eurostat reported Friday.

The jobless rate fell to 10.1 percent in May, as expected, from 10.2 percent in April. This was the lowest rate registered since July 2011.

The number of unemployed persons decreased by 112,000 from prior month. Compared with May 2015, unemployment fell by 1.440 million.

The youth unemployment rate was 20.7 percent in May compared to 22.4 percent in the same period of last year.

The overall unemployment rate in the EU28 came in at 8.6 percent in May, slightly down from 8.7 percent in April and from 9.6 percent in May 2015.
