F1: Hamilton Wins A Thrilling British Grand Prix At Silverstone

Home track favorite Lewis Hamilton was the toast of Silverstone Sunday afternoon, as the Mercedes star raced to victory in a thrilling British Grand Prix.

Over 110,000 spectators went to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone to see Mercedes-AMG team driver Lewis Hamilton, 30 anni, take the chequered flag, winning on home soil.

It was Mr. Hamilton’s 5th win for the season, and yet by far his most hard-fought, overcoming all of those around him to take winner’s trophy.

Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas, the Williams drivers, and Nico Rosberg, his Mercedes team-mate, all threatened to take victory from Mr. Hamilton early in a race. but Mr. Hamilton stayed calm throughout as his rivals fell out of contention.

With not 1 but 2 late race rain showers, a safety car intervention and even a virtual safety car period, Silverstone produced the most exciting race of Y 2015 thus far as decision-making became the aim of the game, resulting in a number of inspired drivers and several disastrous performances.

Having locked out the 1st row in qualifying, the Mercedes Team found themselves behind the Williams drivers, who were however halted by their team from racing each other.

“It would have nice to be able to race at that point when I had the best opportunities,” Mr. Bottas said. “I wasn’t allowed to overtake. Obviously then we were allowed to race but I never had that sort of opportunity again.”

And then the race swung to Mercedes

Mr. Massa and Mr. Rosberg went into the pits at the same time, then Mr. Bottas went in, and Mr. Hamilton drove his way back to the front on lap 21 to roars from the crowd in a 4-way race for the lead.

Mr. Hamilton’s 8 sec lead over Mr. Rosberg was cut in half, but the perfect timing of the Briton’s pit stop to switch to intermediate tires with 8 laps to go allowed him to take the 38th career win with ease.

“As the one in front it was so hard to judge where to push and my front tires went so cold,” Mr. Hamilton said. “I think that’s the best pit call I’ve ever made to come in at that time. From there it was just bringing it home.”

Williams was left to reflect on a missed opportunity after a great start.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who remains 3rd in the drivers’ standings, was thankful for the late rain shower. The Ferrari driver was able to battle his way up to 3rd from as low as 9th.

“I had a really bad start — I nearly didn’t get off the line and lost positions,” the four-time world champion said. “We recovered through strategy, mostly by being very aggressive. … I’m sorry for the people that got wet, but the rain helped us today.”

Mr. Bottas finished 5th, ahead of Red Bull’s Russian Daniil Kvyat, while Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen was 8th,between the Force Indias of Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez in 7th and 7th.

It is hard to know how McLaren will view this race as the dust and drizzle settles after a thrilling race at Silverstone. Their car and its Honda power unit has been way off the pace all season long, in the race Jenson Button was knocked out on lap 1 by his team-mate Fernando Alonso. Yet, Mr. Alonso finished in the points, with 1 in 10th. That this is only the 2nd time the team scored this season yet still might be seen as a positive is indicative of how a once mighty marque is struggling now.
