Fangio’s Ferrari 290MM Racer To Auction In December

$RACE, $BID

A 1956 Ferrari built for Formula One racing legend Juan Manuel Fangio is going on the block in New York City, where it could fetch more than $28-M+.

RM Sotheby’s (NYSE:BID) says the Ferrari 290 MM,Scaglietti-Spyder, s/n 0626, will be offered on 10 December in its “Driven by Disruption” sale.

The Vintage Ferrari  racing car was never shunted despite a racing career that that lasted until Y 1964.

The $28-M pre-sale estimate makes it 1 of the most valuable cars ever to come to auction. A Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta that brought $38.1-M at Bonhams in Y 2014 holds the record for any car ever sold at auction.

Juan Fangio, an Argentinian considered one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time, raced the 3.5-liter, V-12 racer in the 1,000-km Mille Miglia event, finishing 4th overall in the Italian road race.

This 290MM was designed especially for the 5X Formula One World Champion and 1 of just 4 290 MM’s constructed.

In Y 1957, legendary drivers Eugenio Castellotti, Luigi Musso and Masten Gregory drove it to victory in the Buenos Aires 1000 KM.

RM Sotheby’s says # 0627 was purchased in 1957 by enthusiast Temple Buell who continued to enter it into races around the world with Jo Bonnier and Gregory at the wheel.

Later the car was acquired by collector Pierre Bardinon and remained in his renowned Mas du Clos Collection in France for nearly 34 years before being acquired by the current owner, identified only as a private European collector.

The RM Sotheby’s says the car has its original chassis, matching-numbers engine, gearbox and body.
