Ferrari At The Drags: F12 Berlinetta Vs The 599 GTO

When Ferrari introduced the 599 GTO in Y 2010, it looked as though Ferrari had set itself a very high bar for any successor. The car’s V-12 was tuned to deliver 661 hp, and its 6-speed automated manual gearbox was one of the fastest ever, helping the 599 GTO accelerate to 62 mph from rest in just 3.35 secs.

The Big Q: How much could Ferrari really improve the front-engine, rear-drive formula?

The Big A: A lot.

Here’s a video from DragTimesInfo showing the 599 GTO line up at the drag strip next to its successor, the F12 Berlinetta, and when the lights go Green it is all over for the 599.

Ok,  it looks like the 599’s ‘shoe’ had a poor start, though even after the cars picked up some speed the F12 pulls away and leaves the 599 in its dust.

The result is not much of a surprise considering the F12 driver had 730 hp at his petal. The car is also lighter than the 599 and its more advanced 7-speed dual-clutch ‘gearbox also shifts faster.

Ferrari says the 0-62 mph time for the F12 is 3.1 secs. Top speed for both is at 210 mph.

Ferrari is a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, NV (NYSE:FCAU)
