The next race on Formula One’s world tour is Montreal, for Round 7 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship,

Ferrari’s token-upgraded engine brings it just 15hp short of dominant Mercedes’ turbo V6.

That is the claim of Germany’s Sport Bild as the world of F1 begins to descend on Montreal ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.

The report said the upgrades have added 20 to 30 hp, bringing the Ferrari unit to around 815hp in total. Mercedes’ engine is believed to be 830hp.

The upgraded Ferrari engine is in the Italian team’s Montreal baggage, but the Scuderia has yet to decide if it will be fitted to the cars at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, according to reports.

Ferrari has not confirmed what areas they have upgraded, but it seems logical that they will run the new unit. That should allow them to put more pressure on Mercedes at a track where both Silver Arrows cars had brake problems last year after an ERS failure.

Sport Bild said the decision may be taken as late Thursday.

The extra power will be Key on the long straights of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, but Ferrari’s lead driver, Sebastian Vettel is already on the 2nd of his 4 engines in the Y 2015 allocation.

In comparison, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg used just 1 engine each in the opening 6 races of season 2015, an achievement described as “incredible” by tech chief Paddy Lowe.

The 2nd Mercedes engines, to be used in Canada and beyond, are upgraded for reliability, but no performance ‘tokens’ have been used up.

“The Mercedes engine is still so superior that they don’t need to do that,” said Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko. “They just play with all of us, using as much horse power as they need.

“Hamilton and Rosberg will continue to fight for the victory among themselves,” Dr. Marko predicted.
