Fire Erupts At Mall of Qatar (under-construction)

No injuries were reported in the incident

A fire broke out at the construction site of the upcoming mega Mall of Qatar Saturday afternoon, although authorities managed to contain it by late evening.

In a message of Twitter at 8.00p, Qatar’s interior ministry confirmed that civil defence authorities had contained a blaze “at the under-construction shopping complex near Rayyan Club”.

The ministry also said there were no reports of injuries.

The $1-B Mall of Qatar, located next to the stadium that is due to host the 2022 World Cup, is slated to open later this year and will include over 500 stores.

In a statement on Facebook, all management authorities also confirmed that a fire broke out at around 2.30p local time.

“No casualties have been reported, and over 14,000 laborers and staff were safely evacuated from the premises,” it said.

Project director of Urbacon Trading and Contracting Mowafaq Kharbat added: “We would like to express our gratitude to the authorities for their immediate and professional support to ensure the safety of the people on the site and to contain the fire.

“An investigation is being conducted and details will be provided once it is complete.”

Qatar has seen a spate of fire accidents in recent years.

In Y 2012, an electrical fault caused a major blaze at the popular Villagio Mall, killing 19 people including 13 children.
