Parents and children could have more time to save money on Back-to-School shopping in Florida.

Lawmakers passed House Bill 33-A Monday. The tax relief measure tackles various cuts and expands the state’s Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday. The Holiday eliminates the sales tax for Floridians purchasing some clothing, school supplies and computer items. It is scheduled to begin August 7th.

“As Florida’s economy grows, we must continue to search for ways to reduce the tax burden on families and businesses across our state,” said Senate President Andy Gardiner (R-Orlando). “..Instead of a three-day Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, families will have a full 10 days to shop tax-free as they prepare for the next school year.”

The holiday impacts clothing under $100, school supplies under $15 and the first $750 of a personal computer purchase. As early as July 1st, college students could see additional relief.

“College students will have a full year of savings through an elimination of the sales tax on text books and instructional materials,” Gardiner said.

The bill has passed the House and Senate, however the governor’s signature is required before it’s official.
