Glyphosate Is Showing Up Virtually Everywhere In Our Lives
$MON
Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s (NYSE:MON) Roundup herbicide is the most heavily-used agriculture chemical of all time.
An analysis shows that farmers sprayed enough glyphosate in Y 2014 to apply 0.8 lbs of the chemical to every acre of cultivated cropland in the US, and nearly 0.5 lb of it to all cropland worldwide.
When this much of a chemical is applied, it does not stay only on the fields.
Laboratory testing commissioned by the organizations Moms Across America and Sustainable Pulse revealed that glyphosate is showing up virtually everywhere.
The chemical and its degradation product, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), were detected in more than 75% of Air and Rain samples collected during the Y 2007 growing season in the Mississippi Delta agriculture region.
This may higher now, as since Y 1996 the use of glyphosate has risen nearly 15X. The testing commissioned by Moms Across America also found glyphosate in 13 of 21 US drinking water samples tested.
They contained glyphosate levels between 0.085 ug/l and 0.33 ug/l, which is just below the EU maximum allowed level for it in drinking water of 0.1 ug/l.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standard for glyphosate in US water supplies is 0.7 ppm.
A Y 2012 analysis used a magnetic particle immuno-assay to test for the presence of glyphosate in roughly 140 samples of groundwater from Catalonia, Spain. The analysis found that the chemical was present above the limit of quantification in 41% of the samples.
This suggests the chemical does not break down rapidly in the environment, as its manufacturer claims, instead it may be accumulating, both in the environment and in people.
Groundwater, which is water from rain, lakes, streams or other bodies of water that soaks into soil and bedrock, can easily become contaminated when chemicals in the soil with low biodegradability and high mobility empty into it.
When groundwater is used as a drinking water source, this contamination poses a risk to animals, plants and humans alike.
Monsanto has spent millions to defeat GMO labeling initiatives, so consumers will not know which foods contain their GMOs (genetically modified organisms).
In Y 2013, the company donated nearly $5-M to the anti-labeling campaign in Washington State, and in Y 2012 they donated more than $7-M to help defeat California’s Proposition 37. In total, Monsanto has spent at least $22-M in lobbying against state-level GMO labeling initiatives.
Together with the food and industrial agriculture industries, biotechnology companies like Monsanto spent more than $101-M on lobbying to avert GMO labeling and preempt state rights, and that was in Y 2015 alone.
These industries spent $66-M on such lobbying efforts in Y 2014 and just over $25-M in Y 2013.
They may feel defeat is near, as such lobbying efforts have risen sharply.
They are trying to hide the presence of GE (genetically engineered) ingredients and are pulling out all the stops to do so.
To minimize health risks from pesticide exposure avoid them by eating Organic as much as possible and investing in a good water filtration system for home or apartment.
If exposed to pesticides, the lactic acid bacteria formed during the fermentation of kimchi may help the body break down pesticides.
So, including fermented foods like kimchi in the diet may be a wise strategy to help detox the pesticides that do enter the body.
One of the benefits of eating Organic is that the foods will be free of GE ingredients, and this is Key to avoiding exposure to toxic glyphosate.
Eating locally-produced Organic food will not only support your family’s health, it will also protect the environment from harmful chemical pollutants and the inadvertent spread of GE seeds and chemical-resistant weeds and pests.
GMO’s, or GE foods, are live organisms whose genetic components have been artificially manipulated in a laboratory setting through creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and even viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
GMO proponents claim that genetic engineering is safe and beneficial, and that it advances the agriculture industry.
They also say that GMOs help ensure the global food supply and sustainability. But is there any truth to these claims?
I believe that GMOs pose 1 of the greatest threats to life on the planet. GE foods are not the safe and beneficial technology they are made out to be.
Recently the US FDA cleared the way for GE (Genetically Engineered) Atlantic Salmon to be farmed for human consumption.
Thanks to added language in the federal spending bill, the product will require special labeling so consumers can identify the GE Salmon in grocery stores.
It is Key the all GE foods be labeled, this not happening.
The US FDA is threatening the existence of America’s food supply. So, we have to start taking action now, please share this article with friends and family.
Consumers acting together can make a difference and put an end to this travesty.
Eat healthy, Be healthy, Live lively.
