GOP Candidates Scrambling Ahead Of The “Donald Trump Debate”
Republican presidential candidates have dismissed the dominance of Donald Trump in early primary polling, and are scrambling to position themselves days before their 1st debate.
While candidates and their teams are strategizing how best to tackle the billionaire businessman in Thursday evening’s debate, they publicly discounted the idea of Mr. Trump’s rise even as a new poll show him continuing a Summer surge in the latest polls as 2-1 + ahead of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
The Monmouth University Poll of Republican voters found that Trump leads former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush 26% to 12%, respectively, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is in 3rd place with 11% support.
Mr. Trump humbly tried to lower expectations for his 1st debate appearance, which will test his ability to present himself as a contender for the White House. “I’d like to discuss the issues. I am not looking to take anybody out or be nasty to anybody,” he said in an interview Sunday. ”You have to counter punch. But I’m not looking to start anything.”
“These politicians — I always say, they are all talk, no action. They debate all the time,” he said. ”I do not debate.”
A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday showed Donald Trump as the 1st choice of 19 percent of GOP primary voters, followed by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker at 15% and Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 14%.
Fox News, host of the 6 August debate, intends just the 10 candidates who fare best in polling averages from the 5 most recent national public opinion surveys as of Tuesday evening.
Candidates who do not qualify for the debate will be invited to participate in a forum to be aired on the afternoon of the debate.
RNC Chairman Reince Priebus defended the process developed by his party, saying holding nearly 24 debates during the Y 2012 primary hurt their chances in the general election.
Anticipating Donald Trump’s debate strategy has become the Buzz for campaign aides who worry the other candidates’ messages will be lost in rhetoric and provocative attacks.
Donald Trump has not engaged a debate coach, he will be himself, that scares the rest of the canididates.
Trumpeting for Trump.
