Current Greek government has stepped up its claims over WWII reparations from Germany. Greece’s deputy finance minister said that Germany owes it nearly €279 billion in reparations for the Nazi occupation during 1940s.
- Germany in 1960 has settled Greek claims with 115 million Deutschemark, which was allegedly forced upon Greece by other world powers and Germany. Greece has always considered the amount to be unfair.
- This is not the first time of such claim. Greek governments and private citizens have pushed for war damages from Germany for decades. However this is the first time government has quoted an exact amount of claim.
- Mr. Tsiparas even gone further to set up a parliamentary committee last week that will look into Greece’s claim and return of archeological treasure. Government has threaten to confiscate German properties in Greece, should the German fail to settle the claim.
German government has so far shrugged off such claims, however some of the lawmakers in Germany has urged the Government to settle the talks with Greece over reparations rather than just shrugging off the claim.
These moves have high potency to sour the relations between Germany and Greece and the outcome will guide on the balance of relations between two nations. Souring relations will put Greece closer to an exit.
Euro will remain under pressure, unless Greek situation abates. Euro is currently trading at 1.086 against dollar, down -0.72% today so far.
