Hong Kong’s unemployment rate remained stable in June, provisional figures from the Census and Statistics Department revealed Monday.

The jobless rate remained unchanged for the third straight time at a seasonally adjusted 3.2 percent in the April to June period, in line with expectations. In the January to March period, the rate held steady at 3.3 percent for an eighth consecutive time.

The agency said the unadjusted unemployment increased mainly in the information and communications sector, while it fell in the construction sector.

The number of unemployed rose to 129,900 in the three months to June from 127,700 in the previous three months period.

Employment grew by about 11,500 persons to 3.792 million in the April to June period. The labor force also increased by about 13,800 persons to 3.921 million.

“With the entry of fresh graduates and school leavers into the labor force during summer, the labor supply is likely to increase in the near term. Meanwhile, the job and income prospects of consumption-related sectors will continue to hinge on the performance of inbound tourism,” Labor and Welfare Secretary Matthew Cheung said.

“We will keep monitoring development closely, in particular the employment situation of grassroots employees in the sectors concerned,” he added.
