India’s wholesale prices declined at a slower-than-expected pace in October, preliminary figures from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed Monday.

The wholesale price index slid 3.81 percent year-over-year in October, slower than the 4.54 percent decrease in the prior month.

Economists had forecast a 3.88 percent decrease for the month. In August, prices had fallen 5.06 percent.

Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 0.34 percent compared to a build up rate of 1.89 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year, the agency said.

Prices of primary articles dropped 0.36 percent annually in October, after a 2.09 percent fall in the preceding month.

At the same time, the wholesale price inflation for food articles accelerated to 2.44 percent in October from 0.69 percent in September.

On a monthly basis, wholesale prices edged up 0.1 percent in October.
