Iran And 5P+1 Powers Put Final Touches On Nuclear Deal

Iran and world powers are working to finish the latest round of nuclear talks “in the timeframe” that the parties have set out, said US Secretary of State John Kerry in Vienna late Sunday.

“That’s our goal,” Sec. Kerry said ahead of the self-imposed 7 July deadline, while adding that the US will “put every bit of pressure possible on it to try to do so”.

After meeting with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif Sunday afternoon, Sec. Kerry told reporters that “it is now time to see whether or not we are able to close an agreement”, with his foreign minister colleagues returning to Vienna Sunday.

Despite progress made in the past few days, Sec. Kerry said: “We are not yet where we need to be on several of the most difficult issues.”

He said that while he agrees with Mr. Zarif that Iran and world powers “have never been closer” to a deal, the negotiation could go either way at this point.

“We want a good agreement. Only a good agreement. We are not gonna shave anywhere at the margins just to get an agreement,” Sec. Kerry said, adding that “we are not there yet, I emphasize that.”

China is optimistic.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Thursday that a comprehensive nuclear deal with Iran is very likely to be reached after intensive meetings between Iran and 6 world powers. “The possibility of reaching a deal is very high, and a deal should be agreed,” Wang said.

Iran and 5 US Security Council permanent members plus Germany pushed the 30 June deadline for a comprehensive deal to 7 July.

The parties have been negotiating over the past 16 months to reach a long-term deal over Iran’s nuclear program.

In a successful deal, Iran would suspend some sensitive nuclear activities, and in return, the US and EU would begin to relieve some sanctions imposed on Iran.
