Iran Holds Meeting To Review Nuclear Accord
The next US President cannot reinstate anti-Iran sanctions
Sunday, the Tehran government hosted a meeting to review the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, an internationally acclaimed and much-debated accord signed between Iran and the P5+1 UN member states on Tehran’s nuclear activities on 14 July.
The meeting saw the presence of the Iranian nuclear negotiating team, who were led by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, as well as the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi.
Mr. Zarif calls JCPOA a balanced document
Addressing the meeting, Foreign Minister Zarif described the finalized text of a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers as balanced, saying even the timing of the reciprocal measures stipulated in the document has been worked out in a way to be acceptable to both sides.
“The finalized text [of the nuclear deal] is a balanced one. We have not imposed our whole demands on the other side in that text, nor could the other side do such a thing [to us]; because [in that case] it would have been not an agreement but a surrender document,” Mr. Zarif said.
Highlighting the strong points of the JCPOA, Mr. Zarif said that there exists a “remarkable balance” when it comes to the timing of the measures the two sides will take under the accord.
He also made a reference to a resolution the United Nations Security Council adopted to endorse the JCPOA, saying that Resolution 2231 even encourages the countries to cooperate with Iran over its nuclear program, unlike the previous resolutions that imposed bans on Iran’s activities.
The minister reiterated that the conclusion of the nuclear talks proved the Western sanctions’ failure to drive a wedge between the Iranian nation and government.
The purpose of the sanctions was not only putting economic burdens on Iran, but they sought a regime change in the Islamic Republic through mounting pressure on the Iranian nation, Mr. Zarif added, noting that none of those tactics could alienate the Iranian people from the government.
Mr. Salehi says Iran eying commercial nuclear activities
Also addressing the gathering, Mr. Salehi said the conclusion of nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 group: Russia, China, the United States, Britain, France, and Germany, has opened up new vistas for Tehran to think of nuclear activities for commercial purposes.
The termination of anti-Iran sanctions following the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action would have the country focus on nuclear activities with commercial purposes, Salehi said.
Mr. Salehi also gave an assurance that all of the country’s Red Lines have been observed in the text of deal.
He said the Iranian diplomats acted in such a wise manner in the negotiations that although there appear to be restrictions on Iran’s program, the country’s nuclear activities will go on.
The next US President cannot reinstate anti-Iran sanctions
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi also said during the meeting that according to the finalized text of the JCPOA, the next US administration cannot re-impose anti-Iran sanctions.
“From the very beginning of the [nuclear] talks, we insisted that the deal should not hinge upon individuals. That is, the Iranian government would reach an agreement with the 6 governments and the European Union,” he said.
The termination of sanctions will be permanent and the next US president does not have the authority to reinstate the embargoes against Iran said the top diplomat, who was a member of the negotiating team
The 159-pg accord has its own opponents and proponents both in Iran and the other countries that are parties to the JCPOA, particularly the US
While the United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution to endorse the deal, the text of the document needs to be ratified by both Iran’s Parliament and the US Congress.
Expect it to pass.
Have a terrific week.
