ISIS Kills 120 People in Syrian Attacks
Islamic State claimed the attacks in a statement posted online by the group’s Amaq news agency, saying its fighters had targeted “gatherings of Alawites”.
Three explosions hit the Syrian city of Tartous on the Mediterranean coast on Monday.
The blasts took place shortly after at least two explosions hit Jableh, another coastal city further north.
Syria’s Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said in an interview with Ikhbariya that Islamic terrorists were resorting to bomb attacks against civilians.
ISIS exploded at least five suicide bombs and two devices planted in cars, the first assaults of their kind in Tartous, where government ally Russia maintains a naval facility, and Jableh in Latakia province, near a Russian-operated air base.
The port of Tartus has been used for years by the Russian Navy as a feeder base. The port has been extensively used for delivering military supplies to the Russian contingent in the country.
The Martyr Basil al-Assad International Airport, next to Jableh, has hosted Russia’s Khmeimim airbase and reconciliation center since September 2015.
