Italy’s foreign trade surplus decreased in January from a year ago, as exports fell faster than imports, figures from the statistical office Istat showed Thursday.
The trade surplus shrank to EUR 35 million in January from EUR 134 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. In December, the surplus was EUR 6.0 billion.
Exports declined 3.5 percent year-over-year in January and imports dipped by 3.2 percent.
Shipments to EU countries dropped 0.3 percent annually in January and those to non-EU countries decreased by 8.0 percent.
On a monthly basis, both exports and imports fell by 2.2 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively at the start of the year.
The statistical office also announced that import prices slid 4.5 percent yearly and by 1.6 percent monthly in January.
