Italy’s foreign trade surplus increased in April from a year ago, as imports fell faster than exports, figures from the statistical office Istat showed Friday.
The trade surplus rose to EUR 4.5 billion in April from EUR 3.5 billion in the corresponding month last year. In March, the surplus was EUR 5.2 billion.
Exports fell 1.0 percent year-over-year in April and imports declined by 4.3 percent.
Shipments to EU member states grew by 1.2 percent, while those to non-EU countries slid by 3.6 percent. The EU trade surplus for April was EUR 0.92 billion versus EUR 1.09 billion in the same month of 2015.
On a monthly basis, both exports and imports climbed by 2.7 percent and 3.9 percent, respectively in April.
The statistical office also revealed that import prices of industrial products dipped 6.5 percent annually in April and edged down 0.2 percent from the preceding month.
