Italy’s retail sales dropped unexpectedly in May, data from the statistical office Istat showed Wednesday.

Retail sales were down 0.1 percent month-on-month. Economists had forecast sales to remain flat after rising 0.7 percent in April.

Retail sales of food products decreased 0.2 percent, while non-food product sales remained unchanged in May.

On a yearly basis, retail sales advanced 0.3 percent after staying flat in April. Sales were expected to grow 0.2 percent.
