Italy’s retail sales grew unexpectedly in January from last year, the statistical office Istat reported Friday.

Retail sales grew 1.7 percent year-on-year in January, confounding expectations of 0.3 percent fall. In December, sales gained 0.1 percent, which was the first increase in eight months.

On a monthly basis, retail sales rose 0.1 percent offsetting December’s 0.1 percent fall. The monthly growth came in line with economists’ expectations.

Food sales advanced 0.4 percent from December, while non-food store sales remained flat.
