Italy’s trade surplus declined in March as growth in imports outpaced the increase in exports, the statistical office Istat reported Monday.

The trade surplus fell to a seasonally adjusted EUR 3.89 billion from EUR 4.46 billion in February.

Exports grew 1.8 percent from February, when it climbed 2.6 percent. Meanwhile, growth in imports rose to 4 percent from 0.8 percent.

Exports increased 9.2 percent from last year and imports advanced 9.7 percent. On an unadjusted basis, the surplus rose to EUR 4.06 billion compared to EUR 3.53 billion a month ago.

The surplus on EU trade fell to EUR 686 million and that with non-EU trade decreased to EUR 3.2 billion.
