Having profiled Thomas Mair, the 52-year-old madman come 'terrorist' who murdered (allegedly) British MP Jo Cox on Thursday perviously, it appears we get further confirmation of his mental state from his first court appearance. While the mainstream media is quick to extrapolate stories, rumors, and hearsay that Mair was a "Britain First"-screaming terrorist, his statement this morning appears to provide ammunition to both the 'insane' and 'terrorist' claims as he exclaimed "My name is death to traitors, freedom for Britain."
To neighbors, 'Tommy' Mair is a quiet man who tended their gardens in the small town of Birstall in northern England…
"It's a total surprise that he was even capable of thought, let alone action," she said of the long-time neighbor who lived by himself.
"And, yeah, (he's) just an ideal neighbor. Helpful when you wanted it, kept himself to himself," she said, adding he is "very neat and tidy."
But, as CNN reports, details are emerging about a man who has had interests in white supremacy and apartheid…
The U.S.-based Southern Poverty Law Center has published what it says are documents showing Mair has a history of purchasing material from the National Alliance white supremacist organization based in the United States.
The center released copies of receipts and a 2013 subscription to the National Alliance's publication National Vanguard as well as receipts from 1999 showing purchases for the neo-Nazi book "Ich Kampfe," the "Improvised Munitions Handbook" and other books.
However, Scott Mair, reportedly told The Sun newspaper that Mair had a "history of mental illness, but he has had help," and that his brother was neither violent nor political.
"We are aware of the speculation within the media in respect (to) the suspect's link to mental health services and this is a clear line of inquiry which we are pursuing," police said.
Thomas Mair, 52, had been charged earlier Saturday with murder and several other offenses, including inflicting grievous bodily harm and possession of a firearm. Mr. Mair, of the town of Birstall, appeared briefly at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London. As The NY Times reports,
The man charged with murdering the British lawmaker Jo Cox made his first court appearance on Saturday, telling the court when asked his name, “My name is death to traitors, freedom for Britain.”
Once charges have been brought, British media law prohibits any reporting about the case that might prejudice a trial.
As we concluded previously, whatever the true reason behind Mair's attack, it will likely not be revealed in time before the Brexit vote next week, unless said vote is postponed, speculation of which morbidly served as the catalyst to send risk assets soaring this week coupled with speculation that the backlash over the "Britain First" shouting "terrorist" would sway the Brexit campaign to the side of "Remain."
In the meantime, as we said at the start, expect both Brexit camps to distort this tragic event in a way that allows both to "score political points" by presenting the lone shooter in whatever light best serves their agenda. Hypocritical or not, even this skewing of reality may be too late as by now it is far more likely than not that enough people have made up their minds how they will vote in less than six days.
As for tragic events like the Cox murder, we can only hope that they will not be used for political purposes in the future as that would only serve to encourage more violence and death. We will be disappointed.
