Malaysia’s consumer price inflation accelerated at a slower-than-expected pace in April, figures from the Department of Statistics showed Friday.

The consumer price index rose 1.8 percent year-over-year in April, faster than previous month’s 0.9 percent climb. Economists had expected a 2.2 percent increase for the month.

Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages grew 3.1 percent in April from the previous year and utility costs increased by 2.3 percent. At the same time, transport costs declined 4.8 percent.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices moved up 0.9 percent in April. In the January to April period, the overall CPI also rose by 0.9 percent as compared to the same period last year.
