Malaysia’s consumer price inflation eased at a faster-than-expected pace in September, figures from the Department of Statistics showed Friday.
The consumer price index rose 2.6 percent year-over-year in September, slower than the 3.1 percent climb in the previous month. Economists had expected the inflation to ease to 2.9 percent.
The annual increase in September was largely led by a 9.8 percent rise in the price index of alcoholic beverages and tobacco.
Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages grew 4.3 percent in September and that for non-food products went up by 1.8 percent. At the same time, transport costs declined 3.8 percent.
On a monthly basis, consumer prices dropped 0.3 percent in September, after remaining flat in August.
