Malaysia’s unemployment rate increased marginally in May, figures from the Department of Statistics showed Friday.

The jobless rate rose to 3.1 percent in May from 3.0 percent in the previous month. A year ago, the unemployment rate was 2.9 percent.

At the same time, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 3.1 percent in May.

The number of unemployed people climbed to 438,000 in May from 429,000 in the preceding month. In the respective month last year, the jobless figure totaled 406,500.

The labour force participation rate came in at 67.5 percent in May, down slightly from 67.6 percent in April.
