Malta’s EU measure inflation accelerated in May after easing in the previous month, figures from the National Statistics Office showed Thursday.

The harmonized index of consumer prices, or HICP, rose 1.0 percent year-over-year in May, faster than the 0.8 percent climb in April.

Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages grew 2.2 percent annually in May and utility costs went up by 1.2 percent. At the same time, transport costs registered a decline of 1.8 percent.

On a monthly basis, the HICP increased at a slower pace of 1.0 percent in May, following a 2.6 percent spike in the previous month.
