Malta’s EU measure of inflation quickened in April to its highest level in more than a year, on increased prices of vegetables, garments and jeweler, figures from the National Statistics Office showed Thursday.
The harmonized index of consumer prices, or HICP, grew 1.4 percent year-over-year in March, quicker than the previous month’s 0.5 percent increase. It was the fastest rate since February 2014, when prices rose 1.6 percent.
Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased 2.5 percent in April, while transport costs fell by 1.7 percent. Clothing and footwear prices grew 6.6 percent and prices of miscellaneous goods and services increased by 3.1 percent.
On a monthly basis, the HICP climbed at a faster pace of 2.8 percent in April, following a 0.9 percent rise in the preceding month.
