I recently had an amazing adventure to the Oleta State National Park, much to my surprise they had kayaking, beaches and fishing available throughout the park.
It’s summer and with the warmer temperatures comes a chance to get out and experience the largest urban park in the state. With 15 miles of outstanding mountain bike trails, kayak and canoe rentals, a beautiful man-made beach, nine pavilions and 14 rustic rental cabins, I am sure you can find an activity that fits your needs. If you enjoy fishing, they have a newly refurbished fishing pier and several miles of shoreline available for your enjoyment.
Fishing gear and bait can be purchased at the Blue Moon Outdoor Center located within the park. For fishing regulations visit http://www.myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/regulations(link is external). The Blue Moon Outdoor Center also conducts a Full Moon Kayak Tour each month. Tour fees include: kayak, gear, beach bonfire party and S’mores. Grab your fishing gear, load up the bikes or just bring the family and friends for some fun in this piece of “…the Real Florida,” Oleta River State Park.
The recently completed Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail Primitive Campsite, on the north side of the Oleta River, will now enable paddlers to follow in the wake of Tequesta Indians, Bahamian tree-cutters, pirates, wreckers, smugglers, fortune hunters, and millionaires who have utilized Biscayne Bay for their livelihood or their playground. Segment 16, of the 1,515-mile trail, begins at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and ends at Oleta River State Park.
Please keep in mind weekends and holidays can be very busy at Oleta River State Park. Traffic lines may become long and the park may become full requiring the park to close until more parking becomes available. Please pack your patience along with your picnic supplies, insect repellent and sunscreen.
