Nutrition is the Foundation of Our Pet’s Health
My regular readers know that nutrition is a Key passion, and it flows to animal nutrition as well.
And so, I believe that whole fresh real foods are the best nutrition for our pets.
As far as I know there is no independent research being conducted on pet nutrition. And though it is of keen interest to dedicated pet owners the money to do it does not seem to be there from the pet food industry.
It is noteworthy that much veterinary education is paid for by the pet food industry, and so Veterinarians become pushers of pet food, as some Physicians push Rx drugs to their patients.
Savvy Veterinarians understands the impact of nutrition on health. No matter the type of medicine they practice, nutrition is the foundation. And the traditional approach to pet health is limiting, as the bias is toward the pet food industry. It is a business, it develops the diets, the vets sell the products to their pet owners.
The Big Q: Are they really interested in our pets?”
The Big A: Pet owners must invest in learning everything they can about optimum nutrition for pets. And learn know how they can use nutrition to keep pet patients healthy, prevent disease, keep them living longer.
The Key to keep our animal companions healthy is the way we nourish them.
It likely has to be a grassroots effort, because it is going to need financing from people who care and are passionate. What it represents is our desire to get true, unbiased information. Vets need nutrition studies that can help them understand how to better feed pet patients.
The goal: find a way to feed pets that promotes an appropriate immune response so they can live longer and healthier lives. The current nutritional view on how to feed our pets is unreliable if we want them to live longer, healthier, disease free lives.
As it is for humans, no GMO foods for our pets is Key to their good health.
Note: Animal health research is crucial to the future of veterinary medicine. The AVMF devotes its efforts to raising financial support for research projects that will lead to improved treatment and cures for prevalent, life-threatening illnesses in animals such as cancer and diabetes; illnesses that have touched so many of the animals we love and care for.
More than any other veterinary school, LSU has incorporated integrative medicine into their curriculum. They are using the AHVMF grant to support a full-time acupuncture service for small animals, horses, and farm species.
