One day after about a 100 protesters from the Black Lives Matter movement gathered in Lower Manhattan Monday, calling for an end to police brutality and the firing of NYPD Commissioner William Bratton, they got just what they wanted and moments ago NYPD Commissioner, news broke that Bill Bratton is set to resign later today according to ABC. Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to announce Bratton’s departure today, along with his succession by NYPD chief James P. O’Neill.
Bratton’s resignation would represent the biggest departure yet for New York’s mayor Bill de Blasio, which is not to say that the two officials have been friendly. As we reported last week, it’s no secret to New Yorkers that Mayor de Blasio had a “strained” relationship with the NYPD and its Commissioner, William Bratton. Mayor de Blasio and Commissioner Bratton have publicly butted heads over a whole host of issues from Black Lives Matter, to the size of the police force, to the effectiveness of the City Council. Early last year the NYPD famously turned their backs on Mayor de Blasio as he delivered the eulogy for a fallen police officer.
Just yesterday, about 100 members of the group “Millions March NYC” went to the southern tip of City Hall Park to push for greater police accountability. They called for the removal of Bratton and his ‘Broken Windows’ policy, aimed at cracking down on low level crimes as a way to prevent more serious crime in urban neighborhoods. It is part of the platform being pushed by the Black Lives Matter movement.

As ABC reports, last month the group protested at PBA headquarters in Lower Manhattan, where many chained themselves to the building saying the union protects officers who shoot black people. The group has called for an end to the death penalty and mass incarcerations, as well as defunding the NYPD budget of $5.5 billion and using that money to invest in black communities.
They also want reparations for the victims of police brutality and their families.
The protest, aimed at shutting down City Hall Park, is one of series of actions being held Monday by organizations around the country, The protests have been criticized by many after the shootings of five police officers in Dallas who were on detail during a Black Lives Matter when they were the target of an assassin.
Ironically, the NYPD put up barricades around City Hall and inside City Hall Park in preparation for the protest.
The group had said it plans to stay until their demands are met.
“We’re here to get organized, we’re here to build a network of abolitionists and really drive home the point that there is no reforming the police, no reforming the system, no elected politician that will come in and hold the state accountable,” said Vienna Rye of Millions March NYC.
They only had to wait one day, and moments ago homeless leaders were seen celebrating Bratton’s resignation while demanding end to discriminatory NYPD abuses.

Bratton is expected to rejoin the private sector after he leaves the NYPD.
