The euro tumbled against the US dollar Thursday even though Greece repaid a €450 million loan to the International Monetary Fund.
But IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde sidestepped queries on whether she believed the Greek government could default on its next payments.
Against the US dollar, the euro dropped 0.0117% at $1.0664.
Lagarde did not indicate if the thought Greece would default on their payment of over €769 million, due on May 11.
The government has been negotiating with its troika of lenders, the European Central Bank, the European Commission, and the IMF in an attempt to secure a stimulus package in order to fend off bankruptcy.
Although she cautioned against the outcomes of likely Greek departure from the European Union, Lagarde emphasized the region was in better shape to protect against a default than it was during the institution’s primary bailout.
