Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany on Sunday said she expected the IMF to join in a new rescue package for Greece, saying Christine Lagarde, IMF’s chief, had promised to lobby for this with the IMF board. Merkel told German public broadcaster ZDF that the IMF participated in the negotiations, and that it supports the Greece deal.
Merkel ruled out a so-called “haircut” on Greece’s debt but said there were other ways to provide relief by extending debt maturities and reducing interest rates.
