Japanese shares plummeted Monday, with the Nikkei closing at 17,446.20, down 0.7%, as investors maximized profits from a four-day surge.

The Topix ended at 1,400.70, down 0.5%. The JPX-Nikkei Index 400 stood at 12,688.82, down 0.5%.

Japanese carmakers rallied. Toyota Motor Corp. shares rose 1%, while Mazda Motor Corp. climbed 1.2%.

Sony Corp. lost more than 6% following it announced it would postpone release of earnings projections for the 2016 fiscal year. Panasonic Corp. increased 0.3%.
