Takata Corp. is preparing to unveil a restructuring plan to automakers in May, which will include a deal on dividing recall costs.

According to people privy to the matter, the air bag inflator maker seeks to broker an agreement with carmakers and will depend on an independent panel to map out the proposal.

Takata spokesperson Toyohiro Hishikawa said he does not know the timeframe and restructuring plan disclosed by the source.

The company has been under intense pressure following its defective air bags which can explode with too much force and scatter metal and plastic shards at people inside the vehicle.
