The US government called off a case over unlocking the iPhone used by a San Bernardino suspect, saying they found an alternative to decode the smartphone without the assistance of Apple Inc.

Authorities said an unidentified outside party came forward with another option for circumventing the tech giant’s security software over the weekend. This development led to the call off of a court hearing slated for Tuesday.

FBI has spent months attempting to crack an iPhone 5c owned by Syed Rizwan Farook before he and his wife Tashfeen Malik shot 14 individuals in California last year.

The Justice Department secured a court order in February forcing Apple to design a new software which would prevent the device from wiping out all its contents as probers tried to guess its lock code and obtain its data.
