“We want food!” hundreds of Venezuelans chanted outside the Caracas presidential palace in protest, where they were met by troops and police who blocked a major road and fired teargas. The incident started when people waiting in long lines at shops in downtown Caracas tried to seize a truck carrying food.

The OPEC country’s economic crisis continues to worsen, with its people complaining about the hunger from the lack or unavailability of food. Protests about power cuts and crime occur on a daily basis. The country suffers from extreme shortages of commodities and consumer goods, high inflation rates and a dwindling economy despite having the world’s biggest oil reserves.

Maduro states that the drop in global oil prices and his political opponent’s attempts to launch a coup should be blamed for the worsening economic condition.
