Romania’s foreign trade deficit increased in May from a year ago, as imports grew faster than exports, figures from the National Institute of Statistics showed Monday.

The trade deficit widened to EUR 979.7 million in May from EUR 547.0 million in the corresponding month last year. In April, the shortfall was EUR 835.2 million.

Exports rose 4.1 percent year-over-year in May and imports surged by 12.2 percent.

During the first five months of the year, total trade deficit of the country was EUR 3.8 billion versus EUR 2.5 billion in the same period of 2015.
