South Korea’s unemployment rate increased more-than-expected in February to the highest level in six years, figures from Statistics Korea showed Wednesday.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose to 4.1 percent in February from 3.5 percent in the previous month. Economists had expected the jobless rate to increase slightly to 3.6 percent.

The latest unemployment rate was the highest since February 2010.

In the corresponding month last year, the unemployment rate was 3.8 percent.

On an unadjusted basis, the jobless rate climbed notably to 4.9 percent in February from 3.7 percent in the prior month.

The number of unemployed people grew to 1.3 million in February from 988,000 in the preceding month. A year ago, the jobless figure totaled 1.2 million.
