Spanish consumer prices remained unchanged in December, defying economists’ expectations for an increase, preliminary data from the statistical office INE revealed Wednesday.
The consumer price index showed no variations in December, following a 0.3 percent fall in the previous month. Economists had forecast a 0.1 percent rise for the month.
On a monthly basis, consumer prices dropped 0.3 percent in December, reversing a 0.4 percent increase in November. It was expected to decrease by 0.1 percent.
The EU measure of inflation, or HICP, edged down 0.1 percent annually in December, in contrast to a 0.1 percent climb expected by economists.
Month-on-month, the harmonized index of consumer prices fell 0.4 percent in December, exceeding economists’ expectations for a 0.2 percent decline.
