Taiwan’s unemployment rate decreased unexpectedly in July, figures from the Directorate General of Budget and Statistics, or DGBAS, showed Monday.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 3.74 percent in July from 3.76 percent in June. Economists had expected the jobless rate to rise to 3.77 percent. A year earlier, the unemployment rate was 3.95 percent.
However, the number of unemployed people climbed to 445,000 in July from 431,000 in the previous month. In the same month of the prior year, the jobless figure totaled 464,000.
On an unadjusted basis, the unemployment rate increased to 3.82 percent in July from 3.71 percent in the preceding month. A year ago, the jobless rate was 4.02 percent.
The number of individuals employed rose to 11.211 million from 11.185 million in the preceding month. A year earlier, the employed persons was 11.091 million.
The labor force participation rate came in at a seasonally adjusted 58.64 percent in July, up from 58.51 percent in the same month of prior year.
